What it checks
- robots.txt vs OAI-SearchBot · PerplexityBot · Googlebot
- Product/Offer JSON-LD on sampled product pages
- per-surface verdict: ChatGPT · Perplexity · Gemini
01
Crawler access
robots.txt evaluated against the bots that actually gate visibility — OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot — not a blanket “allow every AI bot” checklist. Live probes catch firewall rules robots.txt hides.
02
Product feed conformance
Your feed validated under the exact parser rules OpenAI documents — native or Google-compatible, selected the way OpenAI selects it, including the identifier rules that decide whether GTIN is required.
03
Structured data
Per-SKU Product and Offer JSON-LD checked against Google’s merchant-listing requirements, then diffed against your feed to catch price and availability drift.
For GEO / AEO teams
We tell you which bot blocks actually cost visibility
Most tooling says “allow every AI bot.” The vendor docs say otherwise — and every Shelfgrade rule cites the doc it derives from, re-verified weekly against the primary sources. That severity mapping is the audit's spine:

Questions the AEO crowd actually argues about
Does blocking GPTBot remove my store from ChatGPT Shopping?
No. GPTBot only controls model training. OAI-SearchBot is what gates ChatGPT search and shopping answers — OpenAI's bot docs state that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Most “block the AI bots” advice conflates the two.
Is GTIN required in OpenAI's product feed?
Depends which parser your feed hits. In OpenAI's native schema, gtin is optional. In the Google-compatible profile, a valid gtin or mpn is required unless identifier_exists is set to “no”. OpenAI checks its own schema first, then the Google-compatible profile — never per-row.
Does Google-Extended affect Google Shopping or AI Overviews?
No. Google's crawler docs are explicit: Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding only, and “does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal.” AI features in Search ride on Googlebot.
Does OpenAI require JSON-LD product markup?
OpenAI publishes no JSON-LD requirement. Product/Offer markup matters through Google's merchant-listing rules (name, image, Offer with price and priceCurrency) and Perplexity's crawl-fed shopping index — so we check it against Google's documented spec and say so.
How do products get into Perplexity's shopping results?
Three documented paths: the Perplexity Merchant Program, the Shopify integration, and PerplexityBot's crawl. Perplexity publishes no feed spec, so crawlability and on-page markup carry the weight for most stores.
Every answer above is grounded in the vendors' primary documentation — the same sources each audit finding links to.
